Birds Of

A Feather

By Synthia Robinson-Pack

We usually do not associate our spiritual lives with birds; however, if you had to pick a bird which represented your Christian walk, which would you choose? Now think for a minute before you answer. Which bird would your family members pick? your friends? the people who go to your church? Most importantly, which bird would Jesus say represents your spiritual life?

Let's look at some examples of birds and how they can represent our Christian life.

Buzzard: Ugly; feasting on that which is dead; usually found flying around in the wilderness areas.

Canary: Always singing a beautiful song; however, these birds usually find themselves caged in by people.

Cardinal: Brightly colored; bully; always chasing the other birds from the feeders.

Chicken: Afraid of everything; running around and squawking. Although their eggs are useful, they are not respected.

Crow: Busy running its mouth all of the time; nuisance; easily deceived by scarecrows; picks the fruit from the fields sown by others.

Dove: Representative of peace by everyone.

Eagle: Beautiful; endangered; majestic. This animal flies above everyone else but it spends much of its time alone and nests in rocky crags.

Hummingbird: Busy fluttering from one beautiful place to another; it makes very little motion or noise so it often goes unnoticed; has the unique ability to hover but only stays long enough to suck out the nectar and then leaves.

Ostrich: Head buried in the sand; does not know what is happening around him; constantly hiding from reality. This bird has a large size but doesn't comprehend its mass.

Owl: Wise; sometimes heard; rarely seen.

Parrot: Very colorful; usually found in cages. Admired and kept primarily for their ability to repeat that which it hears.

Peacock: Beautiful; strutting; useless; cannot fly.

Rooster: Crowing about himself; strutting; fighting the other roosters for control.

Sparrow: Trusting; quiet.

Swan: Graceful; beautiful; non-aggressive.

Stork: Carrying new births into the kingdom; quiet.

Vultures: Feeding on the flesh of others; most despised of all the birds.
