POMPEII
Here are some photos from Pompeii. The city was destroyed when Mt. Vesuvius erupted and covered the area with ash and lava. It took two days to see all of it.
Here is one of the body molds made by injecting the plaster into the holes left by the decomposing bodies. Some we viewed this day have more of the skeleton showing. In the background you can see a very small portion of objects recovered while excavating Pompeii. This room is huge and has shelf after shelf full of items. |

Statue of the Faun This original bronze statue is sitting on a pedestal in a small pool. These pools are a common feature in the entries the homes here in Pompeii. |
The Gambling House This building was one of the most important gambling houses in the city. |
House Of Mysteries In the House of Mysteries was this hand carved pole attached to ropes and pulleys. There was no explanation for its use. |
Here is an entrance view of one of the many homes in Pompeii. After entering the main door you are greeted by an open court with a small pool. The rooms of this were to the right and left. In the background you can see a garden with many columns. Between the columns and the pool you can see the mosaic floor that was roped off. |
