PHILIPPI

On December 13, 2003,  Synthia and I went on a tour of Philippi. Philippi was originally settled around 360 B.C. by colonist from the island of Thasos, led there by exiled Athenian orator and statesmen Kallistratos. St. Paul visited Philippi in 49 A.D. and established the 1st Christian church in Europe.

Theater

This column is located at the entrance of a building that was connected to the theater. While looking around the ruins you see a lot of decorative carvings in stone and marble. It was interesting to see that these carvings we done in a marble dust (maybe) mixture applied to the stone. In this photo you can see that the upper section, lower figure, is missing.

St. Paul's Prison: Acts 16:19-24

This is the prison that St. Paul and Silas were place in.

Acts 16:19And when her (girl possessed with spirit of soothsayer) masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers, 20 And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city, 21And teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans. 22An d the multitude rose up together against them: and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them. 23And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailer to keep them safely: 24Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.

This is the basilica located in the lower section of the city.

This is another view of the Basilica pictured left.

The remains of a statue located near the Forum.

This section of mosaic tile is located along the perimeter of the forum.
