Prayers Spoken In The Darkest Night

By Synthia Robinson-Pack

Desperate prayers spoken in the dark of night

Of those overcome with fear, pain, anger and strife.

Some curse, plead and call to a God they resist.

Still others speak out in case He does exist.

Children who suffer violence from the hands of hate,

Wanting to flee but forced to stay and participate,

In this hell of fear and pain that is their whole life,

They cry out softly and whisper prayers at night.

Anxious wives and husbands call out to God above,

Their hearts burdened down but still full of so much love,

For the children who could proudly bear their name,

Yet Barrenness takes their place with Sister Shame.

Some mothers call out for their prodigal sons,

Whose lives are filled with alcohol, drugs, and guns,

Addiction and violence with no end in sight,

Still mothers urgently scream to God in the night.

People with bodies full of disease and much pain.

Their life slowly seeping like water from a drain.

Heaven's their future and hell must be this fight,

They call out to Doctor God with all their might.

Some lost their loved ones in an unexpected way.

Some people beg to die, while others beg to stay.

The things in common are their perilous plight,

And the desperate prayers they all recite.

Their whispers and screams create a pitiful song,

No matter how quietly spoken they all sound strong.

Yet in the total darkness of the blackest night,

There does await hope and peace in eternal light.

God sits and listens with compassion in Heaven's heights

Hearing every prayer spoken in the darkest nights.
