My Goodnight Prayer

By Synthia Robinson-Pack

"Now I lay me down to sleep"

(Oh Father, I don't believe I got through this day,

It seemed that every obstacle was in my way.

I struggled so hard to make it through,

Never stopping to pray and give it to you.)

"I pray the Lord my soul to keep"

(It seems like I'm fighting every demon from hell.

They're strong. I'm weak. I cannot prevail.

Father, please hold me in Your mighty arms.

Battle my enemies. Keep me from harm.)

"If I should die before I awake"

(Lord, I know life's frail. I'm a mortal man.

My life can suddenly, unexpectantly end.

But I know it's in You I've put my trust,

And I've laid up my treasures where they won't corrupt.)

"I pray the Lord my soul to take."

(If tonight I breathe my last breath,

And my body tastes the foulness of death,

My body will be released to my God above,

To forever savor His presence, peace and love.)

"Amen."
