The Stone-Cold Heart

By Synthia Robinson-Pack

How can a stone give heat to another

When it is so very cold to the touch?

Hard and unbending, breaking all others,

Unable to speak, hear, see or to touch.

Unable to move unless it’s by force.

It maintains its position undaunted.

Completely still, not charting any course,

Even if it’s criticized or taunted.

How can a stone be broken to pieces?

When it is very large, heavy and tough?

Yet it happened to sand on the beaches,

Battered and worn down by centuries enough.

The movement of the tide moves the tiny stones,

Taking them where they will go with no choice.

Together forming patterns, not left alone

Constantly hearing the oceans rejoice.

Warmed by the sun until they are quite hot.

They radiate heat to all who cross them.

Bending to another’s strength, fight unfought,

Too small to struggle, unable to fend.

It moves according to another source,

That directs when it shall go and to where.

Now it quietly accepts this new course,

Without any power, without any cares.

Who is this stone that has been so broken,

That gives its will to another strong one?

It is the true Christian, not the token,

Given completely to Jesus the Son.
